Abdicating Oaths, Harming the Sick, Ruling Harshly and Brutally

Submitted by Thinking CAP on Tue, Jul 6, 2010 - 5:10 pm

The word of the LORD came to me:

Son of man, prophesy against the shepherds of [the people]; prophesy and say to them: "This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Woe to the shepherds of [the people] who only take care of themselves! Should not shepherds take care of the flock?

"You eat the [finest foods], clothe yourselves with the [finest clothing] and slaughter the choice animals, but you do not take care of the flock.

"You have not strengthened the weak or healed the sick or bound up the injured. You have not brought back the strays or searched for the lost. You have ruled them harshly and brutally."

God, Ezekiel (NIV)

Even though this was directed at the leaders of Israel at the time it was spoken, I believe it's totally appropriate for use today. However, I do not think it only applies to political and religious leaders, I also think it includes the "captains of industry," in their many and varied forms. I also believe it applies to those who have power over us, like those in law enforcement; surely it's obvious they "shepherd" us in many ways, they direct traffic, set up road blocks, etc…

As a whole, us little people have been ruled harshly and brutally. They champion "competition" yet there is little real competition as they continuously consolidate and super-size their operations; they love their one-sided contracts. And as Jesus says, they look nice on the outside, dressed up in their uniforms, designer dresses and suits, but on the inside they are full of hypocrisy, wickedness, corruption and dead-mens' bones.

Maybe this doesn't apply to you, are you merciful, do you repay evil with good? Or maybe it does apply to you, do you repay kindness with meanness, do you think we just haven't been tough enough in enforcing the Evil Religion of Hate (Drug War), etc… ? If so, if you care about eternity you need to spend some time reading Jesus' advice, talking about it with others, and putting it in to practice.
