Rights stop the wrongs.

I can’t recall who said, “rights can stop the wrongs," because as soon as I heard it, it echoed in my head awhile, while I analyzed it, then I knew I had to write it down. So I wrote it on a paper coaster. And I was kind of fixated on it for a while. :-) It’s possible it was said during the awards ceremony.

It’s also possible the person (I think it was a woman) prefaced it with “only,” as in “only rights can stop the wrongs,” but I can’t swear to it.

While I like the saying a lot, my only nit to pick is that it almost seems to suppose we don’t have have various rights to begin with. That we somehow need to gain the right to ingest or grow plants God put on earth. That that the injustices people face after being unrighteously arrested and/or imprisoned can only be fixed by legislators dreaming up rights to bestow.

Hm, perhaps I will take some artistic license and reword it. “Rights stop the wrongs,” and take out the conditional, “can.” This gives it more force, more inevitability. And I guess if I needed to squeeze it in a tweet, “the” could be dropped too. And I guess “only” could be added back, if more syllables were needed, like in a song or poem. So perhaps I’m being too picky.

But I think at its core is the sad truth that people don’t realize the rights they have because evil liars have said they don’t have those rights. So I guess my final message is that even if others have unrighteously taken away your rights by force, coercion, intimidation, trickery, etc… those who have done so will come to rue the day they did, and unless they repent AND bear the fruits of repentance, they will be the eternal servants of those they oppressed.

So now, my last message is this, for those who are oppressed (and in reality this means us all) we need to pray for those who persecute us, do NOTHING to intentionally harm them, Jesus clearly says we are not to treat them the way they treated us, this is what makes those who follow that advice like God. Do your best to be nice to them! Yes, even while they mistreat you. YOU WILL BE VINDICATED and lifted up!
